CHALLENGE To plan and design an existing clinic which provides Applied Behavioral Analysis therapy for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
SOLUTION Autism behavioral factors, existing environmental considerations, and evidence-based design solutions were utilized to recommend improvements including:
Spatial Configuration + Proximity: Sensory zoning, opportunities for autonomy, order, and organization
Acoustics: Minimize opportunities for acoustical distractions
Balance of Calm + Sensory Solutions: Opportunities for both high and low stimulus
Color + Texture + Pattern: Avoid intense contrast and pattern; utilize a muted, neutral color palette; prioritize natural materials
Lighting: Reduce glare from natural lighting; utilize indirect, diffused, and dimmable LED
Monitoring + Connectivity: Observation capabilities and data collection tools
Safety + Security: Durable and safe (soft/rounded) FF&E
